3. Product Description

BASIC USE
MRT® has scientifically formulated, tested, and currently manufactures ArmorSetTM Instant Setting Hydraulic Mix to produce rapid setting mortar mix when constructing or repairing concrete structures or surfaces which must be put into service immediately. For specific rapid hardening concrete mix proportions, contact MRT Technical Representatives.

COMPOSITION & MATERIALS
ArmorSetTM Instant Setting Hydraulic Mix is a blend of ingredients including high quality, specially selected minerals of silica, alumina, calcium, special clays and other proprietary compounds.

In excess of ninety percent (90%) of the total ingredients are derived from recycled coal fly ash. These ingredients are accurately measured, combined and blended at MRT’s manufacturing facilities using rigid quality control conditions.

PACKAGE SIZES
31.8 Kg (70 Lb) and 22.7 Kg (50 Lb) plastic pails.

YIELD
One 50 lb (22.67 kg) ArmorSetTM Instant Setting Hydraulic Mix pail will yield approximately 0.33 cu ft (9429 cu cm) of rapid hardening mortar.

One 70 lb (31.8 kg) pail will yield approximately 0.5 cu ft (14,000 cu cm) of instant setting mortar.

PHYSICAL /CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
When mixed appropriately, ArmorSetTM yields the following test results when tested in accordance with the applicable ASTM Test Methods.

  • ASTM C 1012 Standard Test Method for Length Change of Mortar Bars Exposed to a Sulfate Solution

5. Installation
To achieve the superior handling and finishing characteristics of ArmorSetTM Instant Setting Hydraulic Mix, the following simple instructions should be used:

PREPARATION
Plug Mix: Clean the area to be filled. Remove any organic, loose or soft material.

Hole Filling: Clear a hole three times the diameter of the unit to be placed into the hole. Posts and poles should have at least 1/3 their length inside the hole.

Prepare no more material than can be used in 3 minutes after five minutes of mixing.

Physical Properties

Setting Time, Minutes, ASTM C 191

                               Wet Mix     Dry Mix
Approximate Initial      3.0            15 ± 5
Approximate Final       4.0            30

Set times are after a five minute mixing time with water. (Setting times may be lengthened with addition of water, see limitations)

Water requirement/bag: Plug Mix; 1.5 L (0.4 gal) per 22.7 kg (50 lb) pail, 2.10 L (0.8 gal) per 31.8 kg (70 lb) pail.

Consistency of a 5 inch spread when pouring a 9 oz. cup on a level surface in 30 seconds is recommended for pouring into holes. For hole plugging mixes, less water is required.

MIXING

Note 1: MRT recommends that a drill mixer or mixing machine be used to mix ArmorSetTM Instant Setting Hydraulic Mix. Post and poles may be set with no mixing needed, just add water while filling the hole.

Note 2: ArmorSetTM Instant Setting Hydraulic Mix is to be used without the addition of any additives, lime, other brands or types of cement.

Note 3: If the environmental temperature is 23°C (73°F), the setting time of ArmorSetTM is approximately 3 minutes after mixing. In hot or cold weather, the setting time will be decreased or increased respectively see Limitations Section). Trial batches should be made to determine the exact setting time for the conditions present.

Plug Mix:

Step 1: Add the amount of water required to the pail for drill mixes or the mixer for machine mixes.

Step 2: Add the ArmorSetTM Instant Setting Hydraulic Mix to the mixer, begin mixing. Note: Do not adjust the mix water until after the mortar has mixed for four (4) full minutes. The mix will look dry at first and will become wetter after the first three minutes of mixing.

Step 3: If the mix is still too dry, sparingly add a little water and mix for a full minute prior to adding more water. Repeat this step if necessary.

For specific high strength mix designs, call (800) 615–1100.

Step 4: Plug Mix: Using waterproof gloves, place the material in the area to be packed. Be careful to pack completely, leaving no void spaces. For vertical or overhead, hold in place for few minutes until setting time is sufficient. The following procedure is for application of setting structural members, poles and other support media such as posts, and vertical supports:

Hole Filling:
Wet mix; pour the wet mixture into the hole. If setting a post, push the unit to be stabilized into the wet mix. Quickly adjust the placement and plumbness. Finish to satisfaction. Hold in place until mixture stiffens sufficiently to hold the unit in place.

Dry Mix: Place the post, pole or unit to be stabilized into the hole. Pour the water and ArmorSetTM Instant Setting Hydraulic Mix into the hole, at the same time, around the unit. With a shovel handle or other device poke deeply into the ArmorSet to facilitate getting water into the mix. Poke deeply near the pole or post and then away from it several times. If desired, smooth the top of the mix. The mix may seem wet on the top for a while. Do not move the post or pole prematurely prior to final set.

CURING
During the first 24 hours after placement, the mixture should be kept damp or covered with plastic to prevent excessive loss of water. Simply placing moist fill material over dry mix will suffice for dry mix placement.

As recommended by the American Concrete Institute, if environmental conditions are below 40°F (4°C) or expected to drop below 32°F (0°C) within 2 hours of placement, one should observe cold weather precautions, or if environmental conditions are above 85°F (29°C) during mixing and placement, cool water should be used to lengthen the set time, observing hot weather precautions.

LIMITATIONS

  1. Time to usability is about 30 minutes in normal weather conditions for wet mix.
  2. Engineering requirements and environmental conditions must be considered to assure proper performance of the product.
  3. As with all cement products, ArmorSetTM Instant Setting Hydraulic Mix is produced from naturally occurring minerals, and variations in color may occur. Color samples of the mixture should be tested for color conformity prior to use on a project. Various colors can be provided.
  4. In accordance with ASTM C 1157 Specification for Hydraulic Cement, do not keep in storage more than three months unless re-tested. Aging effects on small samples or quantities of cement can produce test results that are not representative of the fresh cement nor of cement stored in large quantity for equal periods of time. Keep stored in tightly sealed containers.
  5. Further addition of water will extend setting time, however will commensurately reduce strength.

SAFETY
ArmorFastTM can cause eye and skin injury. Avoid eye contact or long skin contact time. Use tight fitting goggles, rubber gloves, and protective clothing to cover arms and legs Hydraulic Cements can cause injury to eyes and skin. Avoid eye contact or prolonged contact with the skin. MRT recommends using tight fitting goggles, rubber gloves, and protective clothing to cover arms and legs adequately. In case of eye contact, flush with clean water for a minimum of fifteen (15) minutes and consult a physician immediately. Wash skin thoroughly after use. Only use with adequate ventilation and use of an approved respirator is recommended. Keep out of the reach of children and pets.

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are available upon request at the contact information listed in Section 2.
