5. Installation
To achieve the superior handling and finishing characteristics of ArmorFastTM, the following simple instruc-tions should be used:

PREPARATION
Prepare the area to be patched by squaring up the area with no outside corners. The material below the area to be filled must be stable. Do not attempt to fill an area greater than can be finished in 20 minutes. Steel placement must comply with ACI 345R and have at least 2 Inches of concrete above the steel. All surfaces that will receive ArmorFastTM mix shall be clean and free of foreign matter (dirt, loose debris, oils, grease, paints, sealers, etc.). The application surface must be saturated with water prior to receiving the mixture to ensure a good bond. Do not leave standing water.

MIXING
MRT recommends machine mixing with ArmorFastTM and is to be used without the addition of any additives, lime, other types or brands of cement.

Step 1: Add the correct amount of water required to the mixer, as designated in the Physical Properties section.

Step 2: Add the gravel to the mixer. Water may need to be adjusted depending on the moisture in the gravel.

Step 3: Begin mixing and slowly add the mortar to the mixer over approximately one minute. Mix for six to eight minutes. The mix will look dry at first. It will become wetter after the first three minutes of mixing.

Step 4: If the mix is still too dry after 4 minutes, sparingly add a little water and mix for a full minute prior to adding more water. Repeat this step if necessary. Note: Do not adjust the mix water until after the mortar has mixed for four full minutes.

Step 5: After mixing, pour the mix in to place using a concrete vibrator to reduce air pockets. As the area is filled, use a vibrating power screed to strike off the area to a flat surface. Float it one time.

Step 6: When the sheen starts to dissipate, broom or burlap finish the repair area, joint and edge. If the surface begins to harden prior to completion of finishing, use a properly mixed evaporation control agent such as L & M Construction Chemicals E-Con.

Step 7: Walk-on time is about 40 minutes in normal weather conditions. Normal road traffic can be opened in three hours when placed at 73° F (23°C). See limitations.

CURING
Immediately after finishing, spray the concrete with curing compound until the entire surface is covered. Use a membrane curing compound meeting ASTM C 309.

LIMITATIONS

  1. Engineering requirements and environmental conditions must be considered to assure proper performance of the product. If the temperature is 73°F (23°C), ArmorFastTM 45 initial setting time is approximately 30 minutes. In hot or cold weather, the setting time will be decreased or increased respectively. Trial batches should be made to determine the exact setting time for the conditions present. If environmental conditions are below 40ºF (4ºC) or expected to drop below 32ºF (0ºC) within 2 hours of placement, one should observe cold weather precautions as recommended by the American Concrete Institute. If environmental conditions are above 85ºF (29ºC) during mixing and placing, cool water should be used to lengthen the set time, observing ACI recommended hot weather precautions.
  2. As with all cement products, ArmorFastTM is produced from manufactured and naturally occurring minerals, and variations in color may occur. Variations in water used, mixing, and curing will affect color and performance. Test for color conformity prior to use on a project.
  3. Allowance must be made for aggregate moisture when determining water content.
  4. In accordance with ASTM C 1157 Specification for Hydraulic Cement, do not keep in storage more than three months unless re-tested.
  5. Further addition of water will extend setting time, however will commensurately reduce strength.

SAFETY
ArmorFastTM can cause eye and skin injury. Avoid eye contact or long skin contact time. Use tight fitting goggles, rubber gloves, and protective clothing to cover arms and legs.

In case of eye contact, flush with clean water for a minimum of fifteen (15) minutes and consult a physician immediately. Wash skin thoroughly after use. Only use with adequate ventilation, and use of an approved respirator is recommended. Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are available upon request at the contact information listed in Section 2.
